The Shower Doctor with over 40 years of experience in the home improvement industry, offers tips and techniques on how to prevent a leaky shower from turning into something more serious.
The humble shower is the centrepiece of most New Zealand bathrooms. Whilst we all love a luxurious soak in the bath for the daily job of getting clean, most of us default to the shower.
It’s therefore understandable when your shower leaks, it’s a major problem for most households and needs to be fixed immediately.
However, if you find a leak in your shower you will probably be wondering… why?
What caused the leak?
How long has it been there?
We have put together this guide to the four most commonly asked questions about leaky showers.
Why did my shower leak?
There are a number of factors that can cause a leaky shower.
It may have been installed incorrectly, the seals or sealant may have split or required replacing. Natural earth movement or settlement may have caused fissure cracks that have resulted in the waterproofing failing. Some of these factors are easy to see and others require more investigation to uncover.
If you want to know why your shower leaked the best way to know for sure is to call an expert in to uncover the issue.
Some common signs to look out for to catch a leaking shower and act quickly, before it can cause major damage can include:
- Split or mouldy seals or sealant
- Cracked or damaged tiles/ ground
- Gaps suddenly appearing around the shower
- Excess water on the floor or wall after a shower
- Signs of mould or water damage around your shower or under the floor
What does it cost to fix my leaky shower?
Unfortunately, this is like asking how long is a piece of string?
There are multiple variables in this question which makes it hard to answer accurately.
If the leak hasn’t caused any damage and is confined to the inside of the shower it shouldn’t be a big problem. If there is damage, or major/ multiple components of the shower require replacing then the price increases, especially if multiple trades are involved in repairs.
How long will the repair take?
Once again this is difficult to quantify without more information.
As a rule of thumb, the more major the repair the longer it takes, but most minor repairs can be undertaken quickly and your shower should be operational the same day. If anything requires re-fixing or re-sealing, then there is a period of 24hrs where the shower must stay dry.
